Fried Modak


    • 2 tbsps ghee
    • 1 ½ cups grated coconut
    • ¾ cup chopped jaggery
    • 1 tbsp poppy seeds
    • ¼ tsp green cardamom powder
    • A pinch of salt
    • ½ cup whole wheat flour
    • ½ cup maida flour
    • Sun flower Oil to deep fry

  1. Heat 1 tbsp ghee in a non-stick pan. Add scraped coconut, jaggery and cook till jaggery melts and the mixture is thick. Add poppy seeds,green cardamom powder, pinch of salt. Mix well. Transfer the mixture into a bowl and set aside to cool.
  2. To make the dough mix whole wheat flour, maida flour, a pinch of salt and 1 tbsp ghee. Mix well. Add sufficient water and knead to stiff dough. Set aside for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Divide the dough into equal portions. Flatten each portion with a rolling pin into thin roundels. Gently place a portion of the cooked mixture on centre of roundels and gather the edges and pinch to form shape like modak.
  4. Heat sufficient oil in a kadai, add modaks and deep fry on medium heat till golden brown in colour. Drain on an absorbent paper.
  5. Serve hot.
